The 2023 American Women Quarters™ Program

The American Women Quarters™ Program was started by the United States Mint to honor influential women who have made significant contributions to American history. The program began in 2022 and will continue through 2025. Each year, five quarters will be released, each featuring a different woman. The 2023 series includes coins honoring trailblazers like Jovita Idar, Bessie Coleman, Edith Kanaka’ole, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Maria Tallchief.

The Design of the Jovita Idar Quarter

The design of the Jovita Idar quarter shows her standing with her hands clasped, symbolizing her strong commitment to activism. Inside her body, the design includes text representing her greatest accomplishments, such as “MEXICAN AMERICAN RIGHTS” and “JOURNALIST.” The quarter was designed by United States Mint Medallic Artist John P. McGraw, who found inspiration from Idar’s life of curiosity and education.

On the front of the coin, you’ll find the traditional portrait of George Washington, designed by Laura Gardin Fraser. This design was originally created to mark Washington’s 200th birthday and was recently chosen as the official version of the quarter’s obverse, or “heads” side.
